Oceanography 2016-2017

Sept. 12, 2016

In class, we will explore tides using the NOAA website.  Go to the following website: http://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/edu/learning/player/

and click on lesson #10.  You will watch the video for both the lesson and global impact.  Explore the virtual tide pool, scroll over the areas in the images, and take notes on strategies for survival and the challenges faced by the animals that live there.  Do the activity for predicting tides, and play the game "Be the Captain".  Do you face any challenges as a Captain of a large ship? You must complete the game for full credit on this assignment.  Answer the questions about predicting the tides (for each position-4 in total) and the intertidal zone at the end of the activity.  Submit when completed.

There will be a quiz on Friday about tides.

Sept. 14, 2016

There will be a quiz on tides next class.  Be sure to review the study guide and the worksheets that we reviewed in class.

Sept. 16, 2016

Permission slips for upcoming field trips handed out.  Please get them signed by parents/guardians and return to me.

Sept. 20, 2016

We were introduced to currents today with a video:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UuGrBhK2c7U  If you missed class, please watch on your own as it will give you an idea of what currents are, and their impact.

In class, we will explore currents using the NOAA website.  Go to the following website: http://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/edu/learning/player/

and click on lesson #8.  You will watch the video for both the lesson and the global impact.  Complete both activities to the right, "El Nino" and "Currents and Marine Life", and be sure to view the "Coriolis Effect" page.  Do all the activities and answer all the questions USING YOUR OWN WORDS.  Due at the end of class.

Sept. 22, 2016

In class, you will "Take a Ride on the Gulf Stream."  Look up the Gulf Stream on wikipedia and describe what is it and where it is located, how fast does it move and what parts of the globe are impacted by it.  Then you will look up data from last year at the following website: http://fermi.jhuapl.edu/avhrr/gs/averages/index.html  Use the maps provided to color in the temperature differences at 4 different times of the year.

When you have finished your maps, you will go to the following website: http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=41008 and you will answer the questions on the handout.

For HW: you are to go to Google images for ocean currents, and you will find several maps of the world's currents.  Using the list on the back side of your map, draw in the blue (cold-water) and red (Warm-water) currents on your map.  Please label them.  This is due next class.

Sept. 28, 2016

Since we did not finish watching the videos about ocean currents, I EXPECT that you will watch them on your own.  The narrator/teacher is a little goofy, but gives LOTS of good information about surface and deep water currents.  You can use the links below.  All of the embedded videos from the PowerPoint are here:

Oct. 6, 2016

You are to write a lab report for the lab you conducted in class on Thursday.  In your groups, you did 2 different experiments, but you only need to write 1 lab report.  However, each experiment should have a lab report (i.e. I do not want 4 lab reports for the same experiment, and none for the other experiment).  Use standard lab report format-IV/DV, hypothesis, what problem were you investigating (use your lab sheet), your data will be your observations, conclusions, validity and sources of error.  It can be hand-written, but it must be LEGIBLE.  If your handwriting is difficult to read (you know who you are wink), PLEASE TYPE IT!!  You can share it with me in Google docs.  Due next class.

Oct. 11, 2016

The study guide for the quiz on currents was handed out today.  You should start reviewing your notes as we will have a quiz next week.  Bring any questions you have to class on Thursday as we have a retired physical oceanographer coming to speak with us whose speciality is currents! smiley

Oct. 13, 2016

Make sure you study for the quiz on currents.  The quiz is Monday morning.  Use your study guide to help you study.  Use your PowerPoint slides and the information from Dr. Murphy's presentation today to help you study.  Come see me if you need any further materials.

PERMISSION SLIPS FOR BARN ISLAND ARE DUE NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, OCT. 14.  If you have not turned it in by tomorrow, you cannot go as I have to notify school personnel of who is on the trip.

Oct. 17, 2016

Please come prepared for the field trip on Friday: wear shoes that are good for walking on the paths and potentially in the mud, bring rain gear and change of clothes in case we get rained on, sunglasses (hopefully for sun!).  If you are not going on the field trip, you must go to class as there is an alternate assignment for you.

Oct. 21, 2016

If you want to go to Mystic Aquarium on Nov. 4 (2 weeks from today), you MUST bring me your signed permission slip by Friday, Oct. 28.  If you have not turned it in by then, you cannot go as I have to notify school personnel of who is on the trip.  Please see me if you need a replacement one.
