In class, we will explore tides using the NOAA website. Go to the following website: http://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/edu/learning/player/
and click on lesson #10. You will watch the video for both the lesson and global impact. Explore the virtual tide pool, scroll over the areas in the images, and take notes on strategies for survival and the challenges faced by the animals that live there. Do the activity for predicting tides, and play the game "Be the Captain". Do you face any challenges as a Captain of a large ship? You must complete the game for full credit on this assignment. Answer the questions about predicting the tides (for each position-4 in total) and the intertidal zone at the end of the activity. Submit when completed.
There will be a quiz on Friday about tides.

In class, you will "Take a Ride on the Gulf Stream." Look up the Gulf Stream on wikipedia and describe what is it and where it is located, how fast does it move and what parts of the globe are impacted by it. Then you will look up data from last year at the following website: http://fermi.jhuapl.edu/avhrr/gs/averages/index.html Use the maps provided to color in the temperature differences at 4 different times of the year.
When you have finished your maps, you will go to the following website: http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=41008 and you will answer the questions on the handout.
For HW: you are to go to Google images for ocean currents, and you will find several maps of the world's currents. Using the list on the back side of your map, draw in the blue (cold-water) and red (Warm-water) currents on your map. Please label them. This is due next class.

You are to write a lab report for the lab you conducted in class on Thursday. In your groups, you did 2 different experiments, but you only need to write 1 lab report. However, each experiment should have a lab report (i.e. I do not want 4 lab reports for the same experiment, and none for the other experiment). Use standard lab report format-IV/DV, hypothesis, what problem were you investigating (use your lab sheet), your data will be your observations, conclusions, validity and sources of error. It can be hand-written, but it must be LEGIBLE. If your handwriting is difficult to read (you know who you are 
), PLEASE TYPE IT!! You can share it with me in Google docs. Due next class.

Please come prepared for the field trip on Friday: wear shoes that are good for walking on the paths and potentially in the mud, bring rain gear and change of clothes in case we get rained on, sunglasses (hopefully for sun!).
